The anticipation of arrival of Rongali Bihu was finally over when we celebrated Bihu in Sydney on 17th April’10 with great enthusiasm & fanfare. The thought of Rongali Bihu brings joy into Assamese people’s hearts, reminds us of the beautiful “kopou phul”. People from different parts of NSW came to celebrate Bihu & our culture. The cultural evening started with the opening chorus of “Shri moyee axomir”, followed by the welcome speech. The stage was beautifully decorated with a large map of Assam with drawings of Rhinoceros, Bihua- Bihuoti, xorai etc. and setting the mood for the Bihu cultural program.
On April 17, 2010, the only two Assamese in Luanda, Angola, Dr. Prodip Saikia and Lohit Datta-Barua (of Houston, Texas) celebrated Bihu anyway with an authentic Assamese meal of Haanhor Maangso cooked Assamese style, Masor (Garupa Fish) Tengaa, and Maati Maahor Khaar. Lohit Datta-Barua graciously acknowledges Dr.
Prodip Saikia’s superb culinary skills which made the Khati Axomiya meal possible on their Bihu day. They created the festive ambience by listening to Bihu songs from an ipod and leisurely sipping red wine. This was probably the first Bihu in Angola (or perhaps in all of Africa). In Datta-Baruah’s words, “It just doesn’t seem right- no matter where you are at -not to pause at Bihu time if you have a little Assamese in you”.

Like last year, the small Assamese community of the Pacific North West celebrated Rongali (Bohag) Bihu with greatjoy and vigor in Seattle, Washington on Saturday, the 17th of April, 2010. The venue of this year's Bohag Bihu, organized by Jetuka - the Assamese Community of the Greater Seattle area, was the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, 2 miles east of Microsoft's main campus. Although the excitement and euphoria of spring in Assam, and especially Rongali Bihu, cannot be completely replicated in Seattle, the Assamese Community here did not lack the spirit of Bihu revelry.
