On April 17, 2010, the only two Assamese in Luanda, Angola, Dr. Prodip Saikia and Lohit Datta-Barua (of Houston, Texas) celebrated Bihu anyway with an authentic Assamese meal of Haanhor Maangso cooked Assamese style, Masor (Garupa Fish) Tengaa, and Maati Maahor Khaar. Lohit Datta-Barua graciously acknowledges Dr.
Prodip Saikia’s superb culinary skills which made the Khati Axomiya meal possible on their Bihu day. They created the festive ambience by listening to Bihu songs from an ipod and leisurely sipping red wine. This was probably the first Bihu in Angola (or perhaps in all of Africa). In Datta-Baruah’s words, “It just doesn’t seem right- no matter where you are at -not to pause at Bihu time if you have a little Assamese in you”.
