Michigan area residents, along with their neighbors in Ohio and other states, as well as several guests from India celebrated Rongali Bihu on Saturday, May 1st. Although the event was delayed by two weeks, it only added to the enthusiasm and anticipation for the occasion. The evening started with delicious array of home-made snacks to satisfy all palates. The children and adults had fun playing games. The highlight of the evening was the cultural show. From the little ones to the seasoned veterans to the new additions to our community, it was very evident that we are indeed fortunate to have so many talented and dedicated artists amongst us.
The show had something for everyone - solo and group children’s items, traditional Borgeet, very wellorchestrated chorus, modern Axomiya songs, Bihu Geet, Bollywood numbers, Jhumur dance, Axomiya dance, Instrumental numbers and two very hilarious and well-enacted skits. Indeed, it was a true “variety” show. The “Mukoli” Bihu, accompanied by live music with traditional Axomiya dhol and taal, had everyone dancing on the floor. Dinner was also very traditional and included “Masor Tenga” and “Muri Ghonto”. The evening ended with “O Mor Aponar Des” and with warm thoughts of meeting again to celebrate our very own festival in our adopted land with our near and dear ones.
