Dr. Jawahar Barua of Plano, Texas passed away on September 13, 2012 at 11:50pm. He was the eldest son of the late Jyotirmoy & Savitra Barua.
Jawahar was born on June 16, 1952 in Jowai, Meghalaya.  He spent his childhood in Shillong and attended St. Edmunds School.  He was highly intelligent and committed to a lifetime of learning.  This started at IIT Delhi where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  After graduation, Jawahar joined Oil India Limited in Narangi.  He married Antara Kakati in 1977 and moved to Duliajan where he started a family and worked for OIL until 1982.
Jawahar then brought his family to America and joined Stanford University for his Masters and then Doctorate program in Petroleum Engineering.   He also went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Computer Science.  He graduated from Stanford University in 1989. During this time, he designed and developed a computer modeling software used for oil exploration. This engineering software is still being marketed today.
Soon after, he and his family moved from California to Carrollton, Texas.  He spent the next 23 years in Carrollton and then Plano, Texas working for various engineering and IT companies, including IBM and American Airlines.
Jawahar enjoyed music and had a vast collection of records and CDs accumulated throughout his life.  He attended many rock concerts and his favorite band was The Rolling Stones.  He was also very enamored with the outdoors and had a boat in Texas which he would take out on the weekends with his family to go fishing.  Another of his passions was anything to do with airplanes and flying – he made it a point to attend the Blue Angels or any other airplane show when they were in town.
Jawahar loved travelling and visited many parts of the US and the world with his family.  He also visited India on a regular basis to keep in touch with other members of his family.  Jawahar was a voracious reader, loved photography, and spent his downtime at home watching educational programming on the Discovery and History channels.
He is survived by his wife Urmi, son Kabir, daughter Karishma and younger brothers Amar, Shankar and Kumar.
We are deeply saddened at the untimely demise of Dr. Jawahar Barua. Please join us in praying to Almighty for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
