In less than a month after Assam lost her beloved 'Son of the soil' Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, she lost another celebrated literary giant - this time a 'Daughter of the same soil' - Dr. Mamoni Raisom Goswami.
Dr. Indira Goswami, popularly known as Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away in Guwahati on November 29th. She was the winner of India's highest literary award - the Jnyanpith Award, Sahitya Academy Award, Principal Prince Claus Laureate and many other awards and accolades. A prolific author, she wrote more than eight novels, short story collections, biography and translated many books. Dr. Goswami was an authority in 'Ramayana' and she played the key role in establishing a common platform for International Ramayani Scholars. Her "From Ganga to Brahmaputra" on Ramayana is acknowledged as an authoritative work on the subject. Many of her books have been translated into English. 'Adajya', a film based on one of her novels won the national award. Mamoni Raisom was a professor in Delhi University. A peace activist, she was also a peace negotiator in the government-ULFA Peace-Talk for some time. Mamoni Goswami attended Assam Convention in 2002 in Boulder, Colorado as an invited guest. Everybody was overwhelmed with admiration by her brilliant speech and her strong, equal command on Assamese, English, Hindi and Sanskrit. She was an Honorary AANA Life Member. Another AANA life member was Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. In one month, we lost both of them. The family of AANA deeply mourns the demise of Dr. Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May her soul rest in peace!
